Betty Smith - International Roll of Honour

As Betty Loakes, fine runs on the track in the early 1950's earned her National recognition - in 1953 at the age of 21, she was one of the 5 girls who broke the 880 yards world record in the W.A.A.A. Championships at White City.

Called to represent England against France in 1954 she recorded an 880 yard win and for the next 5 years, represented Great Britain, during this period she competed in the U.S.S.R. and at the European Championships in Stockholm.

In achieving Veteran status, she competed in the European Veterans Championships in Italy in 1976, taking silver medals in the 800m,1500m and 5000m.

Betty, married to Dave Smith, also a club member, still competes in the E.V.A.C. Track and Field League and lives in Cambridge.
