East Midlands Grand Prix 2018 – Final Report.

This has been some series with just about all age categories represented by Kettering Town Harriers and what a successful one too!
KTH representation at these events has grown and grown over the years and we are now at a point where we are real contenders in all of the team competitions. There were also winning and podium performances in the individual competition.

Team Results
KTH men won the veteran competition at a canter with the best score possible and wining 7 out of 8 races. To put this into context, 29 teams were represented including the big guns e.g. R & N, Wootton and Marshall Milton Keynes. Well done to Matt Fowler, Phil West, Phil Brigden, Ross Brown and Tom Shepherd who all scored for the team.
KTH Vet Ladies came an amazing 2nd out of 26 teams with a fantastic team of three rotation system including Elaine Fairbrother, Kerry Munn, Nicola Speed, Yvonne Mehmet and Sam Brockway.
We are predominantly veterans so for both the men and women to finish 4th in the senior category is a great achievement. The men were certainly indebted to Jack Chennell shining in the senior competition.

Individual Series Honours
Star of the series was new boy Jack Chennell who finished third in the senior male category. This is the most competitive and the highest in numbers and standard. Jack battled his way to this success against some seasoned strong opposition.
King and Queen of the Vets with Firsts in F55 and M45 were Kerry Munn and Phil West. Kerry won this competition early and dominated her group, not for the first year. Phil left it to the end to win his age group for the first time since his debut 20 years ago.
Matt Fowler has flirted with the Grand Prix for many years and, this year, opted to run all eight races, finishing 2nd in the competitive M40 group. Those eight performances helped to secure success for the vet men.

There was wonderful support and camaraderie throughout the series with a total of 25 Harriers taking part. The series was run in a great spirit as always and this includes our familiar friends and foes from other clubs. The way that some of our team members rushed to help another club runner who was injured at MK was heart-warming. Even if they did make sure they crossed the line before running to help!

Roll call of KTH competitors (in no particular order): Kerry Munn, Elaine Fairbrother, Nicola Speed, Chrissi Stewart, Yvonne Mehmet, Lauren Mehmet, Samantha Brockway, Jack Chennell, Matt Fowler, Phil West, Phil Brigden, Ross Brown, Martin Allinson, Steve Chester, Sean Gallagher, Simon Rowe, Eddie Murphy, Matthew Spearman, Rob Britten, Tom Shepherd, Vince Galiano, Andrew Clawson, Martin Young, Paul Marlow, Ian Hearne.

A special mention to Eddie Murphy, Ross Brown, Phil Brigden, Matt Fowler, Jack Chennell and Kerry Munn who braved all eight races. You deserve a break guys!

Hopefully we can make next year as successful as this one so watch this space in early May 2019.

Thank you all,
Phil West
